Roman Empire

The citizens of the Roman Empire believed that the smell of olive oil, water, and various fruits resembled the smell of sacrifices to the god Zeus Ktesios. They didn't like artificial scents, like perfume (they even fired a young officer for showing up reeking of perfume; they thought that the factories stole the smell from nature). They may have even smelled like the burning of incense because there is evidence that a specific official, the prothutes, was responsible for coordinating ceremonies of emperors where they burned incense. They tried to control their environment by planting bushes in their garden that smelled of flowers. The biggest and prettiest garden was usually owned by the emperor. The smell you wear is a sign of status; if you were a slave you didn’t shower, so you smelled like sweat and dirt; and if you were a emperor you smelled like fruit, olive oil, incense, etc. The scent you wore determined if you should be dining with the emperor or  be whipped by a guard.
